Synopsis
I take a deep breath and turn to my sister. I have to make things right, but my heart pounds as I say what I should have said sixteen years ago. “But she’s not your child. She’s mine.”
My adoring husband Reid squeezes my hand in delight as we gaze at the grey and white ultrasound images, tears in his eyes. Finally, we are going to have our perfect family. But my husband doesn’t know this isn’t my first baby.
As a teenager, I was forced to give my baby to my older sister. I desperately wanted to care for her myself, but our mother said I was too young. My sister couldn’t have children of her own, and I was told it was for the best. But as I watched my sister over the years, brushing Carley’s hair and tucking her into bed with a kiss, I wanted to cry out: I am her mother.
Now I have a new life growing inside me, I realize just how much I had to give up. As I look ahead to my baby’s arrival, I have an impossible choice to make. Do I tell my first child the truth of what really happened all those years ago? Or will telling her destroy our family forever?
An unforgettable and completely emotional story about family and what it means to be a mother. Perfect for fans of Diane Chamberlain, Jodi Picoult and Melissa Wiesner.
Review
Reid squeezes my hand in delight as we gaze at the grey and white ultrasound images. Tears fill his eyes. We are going to have our own perfect family at last. There’s only one slight hiccup with this plan—something life-changing, something Reid doesn’t know, something I haven’t told him. This isn’t my first baby.
When I was 16, I was forced to give my baby to my older sister. I wanted nothing more than to care for her—my primal instinct was so strong—but my mother said I was too young. My sister couldn’t have children of her own, and I was told it was for the best. Everyone said it was for the best. The decision was made with no input from me. As the years went on and I watched my sister perform her motherly duties, I wanted to cry out: I am her mother.
Now with this new life inside me, I realise just how much I had to give up all those years ago. As I look ahead to my baby’s arrival, I have an impossible choice to make. Do I tell my first child what really happened? Or will telling her destroy our family forever?

It has been a while since I’ve picked up a domestic suspense novel, and when I stumbled across, She Was Never Yours to Take, I knew I had to dive straight in. The blurb had me hooked instantly: forbidden secrets, tangled family dynamics, and a gut-punch premise that made me itch to know how it all unravelled. That hunger to peel back layers of lies and unspoken truths is exactly what propelled me to pick this book up—and I wasn’t disappointed. If you’re looking for a gripping story to binge over a weekend, this is one that will grab you and not let go.
I’m a reader drawn to character-driven stories, so when I first met Violet and Corinne, I had high hopes for this novel. I expected plenty of family drama, but I was also hopeful for a standout character perspective that would pull me in.
That didn’t happen as strongly or as quickly as I’d hoped—at least not in the first half of the story. Rather than feeling like these women were changing (albeit slowly), I found the characters becoming static. Both Corinne and Violet’s perspectives frustrated me; neither seemed willing to see the other woman’s side, nor make any personal changes. That said, Craven did an outstanding job showcasing the grief, inner worlds, thoughts, and emotions of both Violet and Corinne.
The minor characters added a little depth, though not much. Lois, for example, was someone I initially hoped would bring this family together as the matriarch. Instead, she irritated me—stirring the pot and expecting everyone around her to do as she said. She had reasons for her behaviour, but by the time those were revealed, I didn’t have the right amount of sympathy left to give. I also couldn’t help but wonder if Carley’s perspective would have softened the constant battle the story seemed caught up in.
While the characters weren’t quite what I had in mind, I did find the pacing well-balanced. The story moved along smoothly, and the chapters flowed naturally. There was a good rhythm between tense moments and emotional reflection, which made it easy to keep turning the pages. The plot showcased tension and grief effectively, drawing me back in even when I felt frustrated by the characters. The pacing was one of the book’s stronger points and kept me invested until the very end.
One of the other reasons I was drawn to this book was because of the promise of family drama and She Was Never Yours to Take does deliver on the drama and the fact the tension was between sisters was what kept me reading right to the ending sentence, so many books seem to place the close sibling trope front and centre so to see the opposite side to that was refreshing.
By the halfway point, I thought I had the ending figured out. But I was happily proven wrong. The plot twists Craven wove into the story kept it feeling fresh and exciting, ensuring I stayed engaged right through to the resolution.

The characters might not have grabbed me as much as I’d hoped, but the ending will stay with me for a long time. Craven did a wonderful job of bringing this story to a satisfying close. I didn’t feel as though anything was left unresolved, nor that the ending was rushed. Everything slotted into place naturally. Without spoilers, I’ll just say the ending is the reason behind my high three-star rating.
Throughout the book, I felt sympathy for Violet and the decision forced upon her, knowing how deeply it would impact the rest of her life. At the same time, I struggled to contain my anger and disappointment at various points. By the closing chapters, I felt like I could finally exhale—a long-awaited sense of relief that made the journey worth it.
Fans of authors such as Clare Mackintosh, Harper Graham, and Nicole Trope should consider adding Jen Craven to their TBR lists.
Yes. I recommend She Was Never Yours to Take to a mature audience, particularly fans of domestic suspense and women’s fiction. If you enjoy stories packed with tension, secrets, and complex family dynamics, this is one worth picking up.
