Synopsis

Every family has their secrets…

No.6 Church Road was the Reilly family’s dream home. A recently renovated 3-storey house with just three occupants and more importantly a whole vacant top floor. So, there was plenty of space for one more. Right?

They had no idea I was sleeping in their empty loft conversion, cohabiting with them, eating their food, using their water, heating and Wi-Fi. Basically, living for free, but it wasn’t for the thrill, I had discovered ‘phrogging‘.

It seemed like the perfect set-up, but when a local woman vanished, I suspected Jack Reilly was involved. You see I’d witnessed their illicit affair, and Jack had a cast iron alibi, but I didn’t believe it for one second.

The secrets in Church Road wouldn’t stay hidden for long, all I had to do was watch, wait and hope I wouldn’t be discovered.

Review

No. 6 Church Road was meant to be a fresh start for the Reily family. With renovations complete, their three-storey home stood ready — three occupants and a vacant top floor, perfect for just one more.

The Reilys had no idea I was already there, secretly living in their loft. I ate their food, used their Wi-Fi and water, and carefully avoided being seen. I’d learned their routine before moving in — that’s how I discovered “phrogging.”

Everything was fine until a local woman went missing. I suspected Jack Reily, the man whose house I was hiding in. I’d seen him having an affair with her. His alibi might have been solid, but I wasn’t convinced.

Secrets on Church Road were bound to unravel. All I could do was watch, wait, and hope I wasn’t caught — not just for my safety, but for everyone’s. Can budding journalist Molly Hudson uncover the truth from the shadows, or will she — like the missing woman — become another Reily family secret?

I first discovered Gemma Rogers a few years ago, and I’ve been hooked ever since. The Night Shift  lives in my head rent-free, keeping my heart racing long after I turned the last page. So when The Stranger at No. 6 came along, I knew I had to dive straight in. From the very first page, Gemma gripped me once again — I devoured the novel in no time and am already eager for my next read from her.

I knew phrogging existed, and I’ll probably watch a documentary about it on YouTube at some point, but in the opening chapters I really struggled with Molly and the choice she made to carry it out. I felt violated on behalf of the family she chose to intrude upon just so she could live rent-free.

As the story progressed, though, my perception of Molly shifted. I began to warm to her when I saw she was helping people along the way as best she could. I think Molly is one of the author’s standout characters to date. She felt like a young woman wandering aimlessly with a goal in mind but still struggling to find the right path to achieve it. Her personality shift and determination really stood out once she began investigating the missing local woman. I found it heart-warming that someone who could so easily land herself in trouble with the law would go out of her way to discover the truth for a grieving family, expecting nothing in return — not even acknowledgment.

When it comes to the minor characters, I believe they added real depth to the story. At no point did I feel as though I was stuck waiting for the main plot to resume; instead, each one brought something that kept the narrative moving. That said, Jack and Helena did feel somewhat stereotypical as individuals and as a married couple, and their arcs were a little predictable. By contrast, I found myself warming to Sally and Ron — they felt approachable, the kind of people you could easily imagine stopping by for a cup of coffee and a chat.

From the very first chapters, I felt something was off. Yes, given the title and genre it’s obvious something dangerous is brewing, but Gemma Rogers makes that unease immediate and impossible to shake. The Stranger at No. 6 simmers with tension, always threatening to boil over, and the pacing never falters. The plot keeps moving, piece by piece, and I can always rely on Gemma Rogers to never leave me waiting for the next part of the puzzle.

“It only needed one nosy neighbour peeking through their curtains to put a spanner in the works.”

— The Stranger at No. 6 by Gemma Rogers

Amid the tension and suspense, Gemma Rogers also weaves in heartbreaking themes — the death of a young adult child and a parent’s fight with cancer — both written with great sensitivity and care.

I often wonder where authors find their inspiration, especially in the thriller genre. Who knew that phrogging could create such a gripping story? It left me in a constant state of panic and curiosity, driven by the unknown. The tension of possibly being caught had my pulse racing, yet at the same time I was hoping for discovery, just to see the truth exposed. That blend of fear and anticipation kept me reading right to the very end, eager to see how the plot would unfold.

Subplots and Tropes included in the Stranger at No.6:

  • Death of an adult child / murder
  • Early suspect
  • Female friendship
  • Gathering of evidence
  • Grief
  • Hidden witness
  • Hero is in danger
  • Infidelity
  • Lightbulb moment
  • Lies
  • Life and death moments

  • Multiple murders past and present
  • Parent with cancer
  • Reporter turns amateur sleuth
  • Secrets

I must admit, I found parts of the ending somewhat predictable, but Gemma Rogers scattered enough breadcrumbs throughout the story to keep me turning the pages eagerly. When the conclusion arrived, it felt earned rather than rushed, and there was even a small surprise I didn’t see coming. Over a week later, I still find myself thinking about it. The suspense promised in the synopsis was fully delivered, and the ending left me both hopeful and a little sad over the events that unfolded. I can’t help but wonder where Molly and the other characters might end up in the future.

I highly recommend this book to a mature audience. Readers of the mystery and thriller genres should definitely consider adding Gemma Rogers to their bookshelf if they haven’t already.

With continued thanks to author Gemma Rogers, Boldwood Books, and NetGalley for sending a gifted copy of this e-book to read and review in exchange for my honest opinion.
